BUTT Magazine: Review for FoRMATS

Published on

BUTT is a quarterly magazine for queer men founded by Gert Jonkers and Jop Van Bennekom in 2001. The BUTT library consists of 29 issues, encapsulating a refreshingly candid perspective on queer interests. Printed on A5 pink pages, the publication’s uniform design by no means signifies any sense of formality in the content.

BUTT features profiles of men ranging from names you may recognize, such as Gore Vidal or John Waters, to men you absolutely will not know, like the writer’s housekeeper in L.A. or Miss Laci, the local cross-dresser in Louisville, Kentucky. These interviews are a mix of personal questions like, “Are you a top or a bottom?” or “Is there a specific body type you like?” and serious reflections on homosexuality, the porn industry, and the politics of gay marriage, among many other topics.

Intimate in content, BUTT is all about the details. For example, an interview with Gore Vidal includes a picture of his cat and a discussion on how he views himself as a gay politician, which is then followed by an editorial of naked men.

The visuals and words in BUTT work together to deliver erotic photographic spreads and raw portraits of men who have no reservations in exposing their preferences, lifestyle choices, or bodies.
